Devastating Dilemma

All of a sudden, from one day to the next, it was winter and snow was falling from the sky. Winter’s coming, they said. Then the time had come, winter was here.
None of us expected the temperatures to drop so steeply. From day to day it became colder and colder. But instead of doing something about it, we were completely incapable of acting.
On the one hand, we wanted to feel comfortable and warm, but on the other hand, we wanted to abide by these rules, and do what was required of us.
Two needs which weren’t compatible at the moment.
A desperate situation. Many of us felt absolutely powerless. We should have been taken by the hand, but that did not happen.
And so we sat there and froze to death as perfect, obedient citizens. A tragic end. A tragic paradox. After all, we all died with pride.
